How to Find your BMW Radio Code

A BMW head unit that has lost power asks for its code on startup and never shows the serial, so the unit has to come forward out of the dash. Business and Professional units release with a pair of U-shaped keys; wide Bavaria units take four flat keys.

Nothing needs unplugging — pull the radio far enough forward to read the label on the top or side of the casing.

On the label, look for the 14-character string: PH7850S1101535 on a Philips unit, BP6262V7022261 on a Bosch one. Ignore the BMW part number (65.12-8 383 147 and similar) — that names the model, not your unit.

Straight answer about BMW codes. The two families are answered in two different ways: Bosch labels are calculated from the serial, and Philips labels are looked up in our database of 489,000 BMW unit codes. Both are free — emailed after a 24-hour wait, or straight away if you would rather not wait. Becker units (BE… model plus an 8-character serial) we work out free as well: no BMW owner has confirmed that rule yet, so a share unlocks the code and we ask you whether it worked.

How to Enter your BMW Radio Code

  1. Switch on the ignition and the radio — the display shows CODE.
  2. Preset buttons 1–4 each set one digit: press button 1 until the first digit is right, then 2, 3 and 4. Past 9 a digit rolls back to 0.
  3. Reverse RDS (Blaupunkt) and Business RDS (Philips): confirm with the right tuning arrow ▷ — not the m button between the arrows.
  4. Business CD units (E46, E39, E53, X3, Z4) ask for no code: they are matched to the car and wake up when they see it. To read their serial, switch the radio on and within 8 seconds press and hold m for 8 seconds.
  5. If your unit takes no confirmation that way, stop and tell us what the display shows instead of trying other buttons.
  6. If the display asks for five digits and your code has four, the radio is set to the US region — tell us before entering anything.
  7. After a wrong code the radio waits: leave it switched on, without interruption, until CODE comes back — it can take an hour — rather than guessing again.
