How to Find your Volvo Radio Code

A Volvo head unit asks for its code after any loss of power. The serial is on the label on the casing, so the unit has to come out of the dash — most take four release keys, two per side.

Nothing needs unplugging: pull the unit forward far enough to read the top and side labels.

Two serial families turn up. Volvo’s own label starts VO and runs 14 characters; Delphi-built units carry a 16-character serial starting 89 — we answer both.

Volvo owners have started confirming these codes on their cars, but not yet enough of them, so this one stays free: you unlock it with a share and tell us whether it worked.

How to Enter your Volvo Radio Code

  1. Older Volvo radios (HU-601 to HU-613, SC series) show CODE: press the preset with the number of each digit, once. There is no confirm button; the code is checked after the fourth digit.
  2. EEEE means the code was not accepted: start again from the first digit.
  3. After three failures the display shows OFF: leave the key in position I with the radio on for two hours, until CODE returns.
  4. HU-650, HU-850 and later units fitted from 2001 do not use a code — if yours asks for one, tell us what the display says.
