Which radio is in your 850?

Radio names are what is written on the fascia, not the name of the company that built the unit — a “6000 CD” or an “RCD 300” is what you see in the car. Unit fitment varies by market and trim, so treat the list as the usual case and let the serial decide: it is the serial that determines the code, not the model.

From 1991 to 1997 the 850 came with the radios below; the serial on the unit is what decides the code.

Volvo 850 radio code (1991–1997)

On 850 cars from 1991–1997 the radio fitted was usually one of: SC-800, SC-900, HU-401. The serial reads VO… / 89…; label on the casing — Delphi units carry a 16-character serial starting 89, older ones start VO. We can work it out, and while the rule behind it is still being confirmed the code is free — all we ask is that you tell us whether it fitted.

How to enter the code in your 850

1. Older Volvo radios (HU-601 to HU-613, SC series) show CODE: press the preset with the number of each digit, once. There is no confirm button; the code is checked after the fourth digit.
2. EEEE means the code was not accepted: start again from the first digit.
3. After three failures the display shows OFF: leave the key in position I with the radio on for two hours, until CODE returns.
4. HU-650, HU-850 and later units fitted from 2001 do not use a code — if yours asks for one, tell us what the display says.
